Like every other country, Turkey also has a very interesting culture. This ranges from our foods to our beliefs and expressions. To give an example, every religious holiday we get together with our families. Children go to their grandparents and they kiss the top of their grandparent’s hands and put it to their forehead. This is a show of respect to the grandparents or elderly relatives. We are really attached to these things. Even though our lives are developing very fast, we haven’t forgotten the expressions which our older generations taught. But unfortunately, some of them contain discrimination. It is mostly gender discrimination. For example, the statement; walk like a man. Mostly the Turkish mothers say that, when we were young and falling to the ground because of our unbalanced walk. The reason for these kinds of statements is that, during the time of Ottoman Empire there was sultan administration; men were the symbol of power, reliability and magnificence. However, women were their property or only a piece that completed their puzzle. Everything was different between a man and a woman; their dress, sense of decency, talking style etc. So, this mentality brought us here and now.

Of course, we improved our selves a lot and most of it was thanks to education. With education lots of women have been able to make themselves heard, if we are talking about the developed cities; for example, Izmir, Istanbul, Çanakkale, Ankara. But we have 81 cities and some of them do not even have schools or they are at least not suitable due to bad weather. This problem has not been solved for a long time. Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development’s (OECD) information shows us that, the ratio of the total population of women aged 15-19 years who are not able to continue their education in Turkey is 24.5 percent. The rate of males in the same age range is 12.6 percent. This shows that women that are living in those cities struggle with education problems a lot. One of the reasons why women aged 15-19 cannot go to school is early age marriage. The rough part is that, sometimes the developed cities cannot help them, because early age marriage is a tradition for those families. That is how they learned from their elders.

In our country women have another problem caused by religion and it is not only in non-educated cities. This subject divides our community roughly into two groups. One side thinks that women have to wear clothes that cover their body parts. I mean, they cannot wear t-shirts, shorts or skirts. The other side thinks that women can wear whatever clothes they want. If they want to wear something that shows their body parts, that is fine for them. However, sometimes girls want to wear clothes that show their body parts, but their families do not allow them. This is due to family pressure. If you ask those families who apply pressure to their daughters, they would not see it as a pressure because they went through the same process as they were young. So, it is a normal thing for them or sometimes they are obliged to do it because of society pressure.

To sum it up, it is all comes down to in education. It expands our perception. With education, women in our country can cope with these kinds of problems. Education will not change us. We will still be the country that is really attached to its culture but this time we will not only be aware of its existence, but we also understand the meanings of our culture.
