The music industry is constantly evolving and it can be difficult to keep track of how different genres and subcultures are faring compared to one another. In recent years, there has been a shift towards more mainstream, pop-influenced genres, leading some to wonder how rock and metal music is holding up in comparison.

One way to gauge the success of a particular genre is by looking at album sales and chart performance. According to Nielsen Music, rock and metal music made up just 6.9% of total album sales in the United States in 2020, down from 11.8% in 2010. This decline can be attributed to a number of factors, including the rise of streaming platforms and the increasing popularity of other genres such as hip-hop and R&B.

Despite this, rock and metal music remains incredibly popular among dedicated fans and continues influencing popular culture. Many popular rock/metal bands, such as Metallica, AC/DC, and Iron Maiden, continue to sell out arenas and stadiums around the world, and new bands in these genres are able to find success through a combination of touring and online promotion. Many major music festivals, such as Rock on the Range and Download Festival, are specifically dedicated to rock and metal music and draw huge crowds each year. One reason that rock music may not be as prominent in mainstream media is that these genres often cater to niche audiences and can be more difficult for casual listeners to get into.
